Chocolate maker Barry Callebaut has temporarily halted production at a factory in Wieze, Belgium after the discovery of salmonella. All products delivered since Monday’s discovery had not yet been processed and thus were not sold anywhere, the Swiss company said Friday.
Callebaut is a leading global supplier of chocolate and cocoa products and glazes. They are supplied to commercial customers such as confectioners, bakeries, gastronomy or beverage manufacturers for further processing. Therefore, the brand “Barry Callebaut” is less known.
According to the Zurich-based company, the salmonella bacteria, which can cause severe diarrhea, were found Monday in lecithin, which is used in all of its products. The company, with more than 12,000 employees in more than 40 countries, describes itself as the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products.
Salmonella at Ferrero
It wasn’t until April that confectionery group Ferrero had to shut down production at its facility in Arlon, Belgium, due to salmonella, followed by a sweeping recall of children’s products. Authorities in several European countries have linked numerous cases of salmonellosis to the chocolate products, with at least 14 confirmed cases in Austria.
