30 years ago the most serious politically motivated murder attempt took place in the second republic in Austria. Franz Fuchs from South Styrian Gralla deposited a pipe bomb in Oberwart Burgenland, killing four men from a Roma settlement. The styrician top lawyer Gerald Ruhri defended Fuchs. Many questions remain open to him.
“Krone”: Why did you make the decision to defend Franz Fuchs?
Gerald Ruhri: Franz Fuchs had a lawyer who clearly showed no great interest in this case. Criminal law has always fascinated me and the Causa letter bombs was particularly spectacular, so I tried to make the mandate. That was about a year after he was arrested.
