On Friday afternoon, the main square in Graz was suddenly transformed into an open-air disco: the bass boomed to over 100 decibels in the middle of the state capital. However, this event, defined as a “demo”, was not approved, so Mayor Elke Kahr had the power turned off. The police did the rest and broke up the rave party.
In the beginning, there was great surprise among residents, passers-by and business people on the main square in Graz. Then came the immediate annoyance: Because the bass-heavy sound system with more than 100 decibels caused a lot of noise in the heart of the city.
Demo without consumption
What was behind it? An initiative from Graz wanted to demonstrate for consumption-free zones for artists. The registration as a demonstration and rally was rejected in advance by the state police.
Apparently the protesters didn’t let that stop them and started a rave party – or demo – in the middle of the central square with a booming bass.
Mayor Elke Kahr (KPÖ) quickly put an end to the crowds and had Energie Graz cut the power supply to the area in question. Police then broke up the event and the riot ended around 4 p.m.
