Shock accidents – bath disasters in Vienna: three deaths in 24 hours

Date:

Old Danube, New Danube, the bathing lake in Aspern – three people died in Vienna alone within 24 hours. A victim drifted among aquatic plants for a day.

The grisly series of tragic bathing accidents continues. In Vienna alone, three people died in three different bodies of water within 24 hours this week. The last victim was only discovered a day after his disappearance…

Search initially stopped
Specifically, it concerns a 52-year-old man who went into the water late on Wednesday evening at the so-called Romawiese on the Old Danube. After he did not return, the Slovak’s friends sounded the alarm. Shortly afterwards, the fire brigade arrived with divers and at the same time the police helicopter searched for the missing person from the air – the search was stopped in vain.

The next day, divers from the Austrian water rescue service started another attempt – and then it became a sad certainty: the emergency services discovered the lifeless man floating among aquatic plants. At that point it was too late to resuscitate.

Deep sorrow for girls and a family man
Also on Wednesday night, as reported, a family tragedy on the New Danube made headlines: While trying to save his five-year-old son, a 43-year-old went under and drowned. The family of three had previously fallen from a rental boat for unclear reasons.

On Thursday afternoon, a girl (11) from Nigeria drowned in the swimming lake in Seestadt Aspern. The little one apparently slipped into deeper and deeper water – she wasn’t a swimmer! That is why the Red Cross again calls for caution at the beginning of the holiday in the east. In Vienna, about half of all eight-year-olds cannot swim.
