Day 39 in Russia’s war against Ukraine: These are the most important developments of the day.
The most important things in a nutshell:
- The Russian attacks now seem to be shifting to the Donbass and the south of the country. Several fires are reported after an airstrike from the strategically important Ukrainian coastal city of Odessa.
- British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged further aid to Ukraine. According to the Kiev Independent, he wants to send anti-ship missiles to stop the Russian advance towards the port city of Odessa.
- According to Ukraine, Russia has indicated that it is ready for negotiations at the presidential level. Moscow, on the other hand, states that the negotiations have not yet reached a stage that would allow a face-to-face meeting between Zelensky and Putin.
- The Russian military has announced the opening of escape corridors for foreign citizens in the port cities of Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov for Sunday.
- The withdrawal of Russian troops from the Kiev region appears to have come to a gruesome end. Ukrainian soldiers report dozens of dead civilians lying in the streets of the Bucha suburb.
