Heike and Jürgen Baumhaker save themselves from a mess at the last minute. Now they have nothing left. Germans who love Carinthia.
They are sitting in front of the house “Am Steinbruch” of the Diakonie, their two dogs “Bruno” and “Elsa” are at their feet: Heike and Jürgen Baumhaker, who flew out of the storm disaster area on Thursday with the police helicopter. The couple from Germany fulfilled their dream of living in Carinthia 17 years ago with the purchase of the “Kelag-Haus” in the wasteland. “We renovated everything and then moved here.”
How did the couple experience the night of the disaster? “First the power was out, then we heard noise, then threatening noises and then a huge wave, five meters high, came downstream and towards us,” recalls Jürgen Baumhaker in an interview with “Krone”.
By then the bridge leading to their bottom had already torn away. A reason that shortly afterwards was completely submerged and murmured. ‘We’ll stay,’ the Baumhakers thought then. The couple informed themselves with a crank-operated emergency radio and held on for the time being. “But on Thursday night the creek kept rising, so we asked for help anyway.” And it came, the Baumhakers and their two dogs were flown out of the wasteland by helicopter.
The two don’t know what will happen next. For the time being they find shelter and shelter with their daughter in Salzburg.
“Then we will see what is left of our country, of our house. Then it will be decided whether we will return to the place where we moved from Germany 17 years ago.”
Completely destroyed
Photos of the old power station, which stood just meters from their home, show the catastrophe the two escaped from. It’s completely destroyed. It was built in 1920 by the grandfather of the legendary photographer Gerd Eggenberger for the electric utility, now the builder’s grandson had to photograph the ruins from the air.
