UV -treated larvae – EU is expanding rules for insects in food

UV-treated insect powder can be used in food in the European Union from Monday. In particular, it concerns powder entire larvae of the flower beetle (Tenebrio Molitor). However, limitations apply.

In principle, flour beetles are already approved as food, the new approval is about the UV treatment. According to the information, this step increases the vitamin D content of the powder.

According to the new regulation, the powdered and accordingly treated larvae can initially only be placed on the market by a French company.

Must be on the package
Insects may have been used in food in the EU for a long time. Manufacturers must apply for approval. If insects are used in food, this must be on the package.

“People in the EU can choose what they eat and nobody forces them to eat insects or worms,” ​​said the EU committee. There are clear rules and information about this form of food. Before they could be launched on the market, they would go through very strict scientific assessments.

People are rather skeptical
So far, consumers have remained rather skeptical with regard to insects such as food. According to a representative online survey on behalf of the Food and Pet Food manufacturer Heristo AG, the elderly people who in particular have his interviewed are great concerns.

Insects are considered nutritious and rich in proteins and are part of the normal kitchen in many countries. They can also contribute to a sustainable diet because they can be bred relatively resources -friendly. However, there may be risks for allergy patients.
