For example, dental orders are set up in almost all prisons and forensic-therapeutic centers. Between January 2022 and September 2024, exactly 42,863 dental fillings were given to prisoners. In 2022 there were 14,774 dents (costs: 715,464.90 euros), in 2023 it was 15,937 (costs: 879,616.60 euros) and until September 2024 there were 12,152 (costs: 706.044.50 euros). That is the total costs of 2.3 million euros.
The giving filling material was invoiced as giving filling material in the amalgam attack, but with slightly hardened plastics in the front tooth. This corresponds to the reimbursement schedule for contract dental doctors, which forms the basis for compensating the dental service with social security. There are no concrete data for external dental treatments.
Criticism from freedom
“Amalgam fillings have been forbidden in the EU since the beginning of the year. Although the free population experiences the problem that the ÖGK and the dental association cannot agree on a solution for new fillings, the prison remains diligently sealed – against tax costs and without amalgam, ”emphasizes NR Harald Schuh of the FPö.
37 million euros for external interventions
The total costs of external health treatments, for example in hospitals, amounted to around 37 million euros. “We see that prisoners always set brutal requirements, forcing staff with the public prosecutor and forcing expensive health treatments outside prison. Every day there are approximately 34,000 euros for this so -called versions, where the considerable extra effort has not yet been taken into account, “says Nr Schuh and adds:” There is a clear savings potential here. It may not be that those who are directly behind bars can enjoy better care than unsolved citizens.
Focus also on special food
In addition to the costs of health care, those of special types of catering for prisoners – such as Koscher, Halal, Vegetarian and Vegan – are also mentioned. A total of 204,423 euros was spent on this between January 2022 and September 2024.
