Terri Estepp just wanted to be there for her daughter. But their bosses showed no grace. Now the American who worked in a bank is moving to court.
Terri Estepp (55) had worked loyal for Huntington Bank for 30 years. But when her daughter Samantha (31) suffered seriously, that suddenly counted nothing. Samantha suffered from a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer. Her mother wanted to be there for her – and was fired for it.
In addition, she had correctly followed the law. Initially, the 55-year-old from Detroit took her vacation to keep her daughter in California in California more than 3000 kilometers away. Then she had to fall back on the “Family Medical Leave Act”. This law enables Americans to take an unpaid holiday for the care of family members for a maximum of twelve weeks. She applied for four of the twelve weeks to help Samantha. When the time was in the neighborhood and she came back to work, she told the bosses that she needed a little longer.
The answer followed quickly: with the dismissal. “I was completely shocked,” says Terri. “Because my previous boss had presented that himself.”
Samantha died a week and a half later. “With the idea that she is responsible for my release,” says the mother. Because the Huntington Bank never informed her about the reason for termination, she is now complaining to the former employer. “Everyone has to find out what the bank did. It was wrong and something like that should not be repeated.
