Campus too unsafe? – Violent riots after student murder in Tehran

The Iranian capital is currently shaking huge protests. The reason: the murder of a student. According to the authorities, the police have now taken several suspects in custody.

“The perpetrators were arrested and interrogated,” said Justice spokesperson Asghar Jahangir in the state of television. The 19-year-old student Amir Mohammad Khalghi was robbed on Wednesday and murdered near his dormitory in the capital of Iran on Wednesday.

The crime caused great indignation and protests among students for more security on the campus of the University of Tehran. Dozens of students participated in a demonstration on Friday. As the newspaper “Ham Mihan” reported, there were clashes with security forces in the citizen.

Minister of Science Hossein Simaei Sarraf rejected reports on the arrest of students after the protests. He also announced the resignation of the head of the Tehran University department.

Vice President Mohammad Reza Area ordered a thorough investigation of the law, such as the Irna news agency of the state of Irna. The Fars News Agency reported that Khalghi was buried on Saturday in his home village in the eastern province of South Khorasan.

In September 2022, the death of the young Kurdin Mahsa Amini caused mass protests in Iran. The 22-year-old had died after her arrest by the Iranian moral police, which she had arrested for an alleged violation of the strict Islamic clothing regulations. The death of Amini resulted in months of protests with hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries.
