Large shock: A brown bear attacked a family with two children during an idyllic walk in the Slovak region of Liptau.
According to the official count there are around 1200 freely living bears in Slovakia. They usually avoid people when they notice them on time. In the case of a surprising meeting or when mother animals see their young, attacks can occur.
Parents and children were on a forest walk path in the municipal area of Partizanska Lupca when they scored a bear, which weighs around 80 kilograms. This initially started directly with the children, but let them go when father and mother protected them with their own bodies. So the woman sustained minor injuries, the children remained both unharmed.
Here the attack took place:
Mayor speaks of “Little Miracle”
Mayor Ladislav Balazec said on Facebook that it was a “little miracle” that no longer happened. The next day he investigated the scene of the incident with the Braun Bear Occupational team of the State Nature Conservation and discovered a bear cave just a few meters away. The environment is now being observed with such a man -made photo and regular controls. The mayor called on the population to avoid the hazard location.
Maintaining “problem bears” are controversial
In short, Bears in Slovakia are protected all year round and can only be shot in exceptional cases if they threaten the risk of people. About pressure from hunters and local politicians, the government in Bratislava decided last year to release a maximum of one hundred so – -driven “problem bears” to shoot. However, this decision is politically very controversial.
