A sad ending for Phan Thi Kim Phuc, whose photo became a symbol of the horrors of the Vietnam War.
50 years after the napalm attack on her village in Vietnam, Phan Thi Kim Phuc receives her final skin treatment from a burns specialist in Miami, Florida.
Phuc was photographed when he was nine, running naked and screaming in pain after a South Vietnamese attack plane dropped napalm. Nick Ut, the photographer who took the photo in June 1972, saved her life. He drove her away to get medical attention.
The girl spent more than a year in hospital recovering from her injuries. Since then, she has lived with constant pain and limited range of motion.
The 59-year-old hates the world-famous photo of the ‘napalm girl’. She is ashamed that she is depicted there naked. When asked how she feels today, the Canadian of choice says: “I am not a victim of the war. I am a survivor.”
