The radical Islamic Taliban make people sit up again with a dress code: bodybuilders in Afghanistan are no longer allowed to wear swimming trunks. The area from the stomach to the knees should be covered, it said.
“Young people should be happy that we allow them bodybuilding,” said one of the leading Taliban. In any case, the relevant area of the lower body should be covered, it said.
Athletes report that interest in bodybuilding has waned since the Taliban came to power — likely due to the restrictions athletes face.
Taking power brought limitations
After the takeover, the Islamists promised a more moderate government than during their 1996-2001 rule. In recent months, however, numerous freedoms have been curtailed – especially for women. Taliban chief Hibatullah Akhundzada has ordered Afghan women to wear the burqa again in public, and there have also been huge setbacks in education.
