Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced this Sunday the capture of the city of Lisichansk, the last bastion of the Ukrainian armed forces in the eastern region of Lugansk, one of the major targets of the Russian invasion of the country and which has already been “liberated,” in the soldier’s words.
Ukraine insists the city is still in dispute but has acknowledged the advances made by Russian forces amid fierce fighting and widespread destruction. There are no casualty figures yet given the chaotic situation.
Shoigu has informed Russian President Vladimir Putin of the capture, to whom he has assured that Russian forces, along with the militias of the self-declared People’s Republic of Lugansk, close to Moscow, already have “total control” of the city and series of nearby settlements, including Belogorovka, Novodruzhesk, Maloriazantsevo and Belaya Gora.
“The total area of the liberated areas in the last 24 hours amounted to 182 square kilometers,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement collected by the Interfax agency.
The general staff of the Ukrainian army admitted for the first time on Sunday that Russian troops and their allies have made progress in the city. “The occupiers are concentrating on consolidating their positions in the cities of Lisichansk and Verjniokamianka,” the general staff said in a statement.
Ukraine’s military administrator for the Lugansk region, Sergei Gaidai, has confirmed that Russian troops have “gained a foothold in the city” and it is unknown how many Ukrainian troops are left there.
Help rebuild Ukraine
The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, for his part, this Saturday asked for international aid for the reconstruction of the country.
“It is necessary not only to restore everything destroyed by the occupiers, but also to lay a new foundation for our lives, for Ukraine: safe, modern, convenient, without barriers. This requires colossal investments: billions, new technologies, best practices, new institutions and, of course, reforms,” explains Zelensky.
He also referred to the Lugano conference in Switzerland, where 40 countries will meet to coordinate plans to support Ukraine.
The Ukrainian head of state explained that from this Monday he will “show” the situation of the country to every state in order to get “extraordinary opportunities” and thus “invite” every company to work in Ukraine.
