Rare phenomena – spectacle in the air: two darkness in March

Date:

A lunar eclipse that is only visible in Austria, and a solar eclipse in which the moon is only somewhat covered by the sun – both air events still offer exciting moments for astronomy lovers. What exactly can be seen and when it is worth seeing.

March has two darkness to offer – a total lunar eclipse on March 14 and a partial solar eclipse on March 29. According to Alexander Pikhard van de Vienna working group for Astronomy (WAA), both darkness are not very spectacular, but still: they are worth observing astronomy enthusiasts. With the lunar eclipse, the moon in Germany, far before the totality, goes down. The solar eclipse can be seen in full barrel, but the moon will only cover a bit of the sun.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, the earth and the moon are on a line and the shadow of the earth lit by the sun falls on the moon. When the moon steps into the core shadow of the earth, it is completely protected by the direct rays of the sun. In the partial shadow, part of the sunlight still reaches the moon.

Moon has darkened nine percent
With the lunar eclipse on March 14, the moon gets into the nuclear shadow of the earth (Vienna) at 6.09 am. However, the moon then goes off 6.15 am and is only nine percent darkened. There is a better view of the heavenly shadow game in North and South America.

There are only sun finals at Neumond. Seen from the earth is the moon near the sun. On average twice a year, the earth at least partially hides the sun disk.

In Austria this spectacle can be seen on March 29: the partial solar eclipse starts at 11.41 am (Vienna), the maximum coverage is reached at 12.18 pm. The sun is only partially covered by the Moon: 14 percent in relation to the diameter or six percent based on the sun disk area. In general, the partial darkness – which is nowhere to be seen in the world in a ring or completely visible – takes an hour and eleven minutes (Vienna).

Do not use “home remedies”
To observe a solar eclipse, you should definitely protect your eyes with the right equipment. Dark glasses or solar filter film are needed that are available in astronomical specialist retailers. Sunglasses offer too little protection, experts also warn about the use of “home remedies” such as rescue ceilings, with soot blown glasses, CDs or the like.

The year 2025 has a second – more attractive – lunar eclipse: on 7 September the Moon will be 86 percent at 7:21 pm in the nuclear shadow of the world (Vienna). The total finish starts at 7.30 pm and lasts until 8:53 pm.
