From 2 April 2025, the United Kingdom will require all European citizens for the electronic travel authorization (AEV) – (Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), in English – to travel to the country (without a visa or legal stay / in the case of a visa or legal stay).
What is electronic travel authorization (AEV or ETA)?
It is a necessary authorization for tourism, business visits and students whose stay in the country will be less than six months. The authorization will be processed electronically and must be obtained before they travel to the United Kingdom.
Who should obtain electronic travel authorization?
European citizens – even minors – need such an electronic authorization to travel through tourism, companies or other visits of less than six months.
The measure also applies to passengers who have to make scales and the luggage again in the United Kingdom or have to pass border control.
Exceptions
They will be exempt from registering:
– Those travelers who only travel to the United Kingdom and stay at the airport during transport to take another flight (if it does not mean that border control is passed). The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges citizens to consult their airlines to secure routes
– those who have an approved visa
– those who have already been registered as residents in the United Kingdom
– those citizens with the Irish passport
How do I request electronic travel authorization?
The registration, which will be processed electronically on the website of the British government or with the British ETA application before they travel to the United Kingdom, has an initial costs of 10 pounds (about 12 euros) and an duration of two years, once the approval has been received. During those two years you can travel to the United Kingdom for so long for a stay of less than six months. In the coming months, an increase to 16 pounds (about 19 euros) is expected.
The authorization normally takes between a few hours and a few days.
