Seductive in good weather, especially with younger children dangerous: open windows and balconies. In recent years, a total of 191 children have fallen from windows or balconies. “Young children are in particular the risk,” warns Johanna Trauner-Karner of the Board of Trustees for Road Safety (KFV).
“Unprecated toddlers often show amazing skills,” emphasizes Trauner-Karner. “They climb on benches to open a window, climb over the parapet of the balconies or are on armchairs to view a look in the outside.”
Almost three -quarters of the accidents took place in the last 15 years from March to August. “In mild weather we will see an increased dynamic in some years because the living rooms are increasingly ventilated,” the expert said.
Children usually fall from the first floor
Most accidents have been accepted in Vienna, 58 Window and Balcony Falls. In upper Austria there were 44 and 24 accidents in Styria. Most children ran down from the first floor. Only eight children were not injured, 78 were injured and four cases even ended fatally.
What can parents do so that such an accident does not happen? “Remove objects from window sons or balcony parquetes that seem attractive to children, and rest your windows and balcony doors with lockable handles,” appeals to Trauner-Karner.
