Large-scale operation in chapels on the Mürz: a forest fire broke out there on Sunday afternoon. The wind and terrain made it difficult for the 107 firefighters to put out the fire…
At about 4 p.m., the operation was still in full swing: 107 emergency services from nine fire brigades set fire to the Karnsteinerkogel in Kapellen an der Mürz, a drone pilot helped keep track. Because a forest fire broke out there in the early afternoon – multiple reports of smoke columns came in from different people.
Difficult extinguishing action
According to the police, the wind made it especially difficult to extinguish the fire: if you get the flames under control on one side, it is possible that the wind will rekindle the fire elsewhere. The difficult terrain did not make the situation any easier, nor did the lack of water on the mountain. In addition, two helicopters and a fire brigade were therefore requested.
Mission ended for now
Once the mission is over, the 1,500 m² site will be under surveillance. “At night, the drone’s thermal imager is checked again for embers,” said police spokeswoman Victoria Gimpel. No one was injured, the cause may have been a lightning strike.
