Turkish authorities have detained a ship flying the Russian flag. According to Ukrainian sources, stolen grain is on board the cargo ship.
Turkish authorities are fully cooperating with the Ukrainian side, Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey Vasyl Bodnar said on Twitter on Sunday. Reuters reporters saw the cargo ship Zhibek Zholy anchor about a kilometer off the Turkish port of Karasu. Statements from Turkey and Russia have not yet been received.
Ukraine suspects the illegal export of grain stolen by Russian occupiers and has therefore asked the Turkish authorities to investigate the cargo ship. According to a foreign ministry representative in Kiev, the ship had left the Russian-occupied Ukrainian port of Berdyansk with 4,500 tons of grain on board. In a letter from the Prosecutor General of June 30 to the Ministry of Justice in Kiev even mentions 7,000 tons of grain.
Cargo Ship To Be Investigated
The Attorney General asked Turkish authorities to examine the cargo ship and take samples of the grain. In addition, the Turkish officials must ask for proof of origin. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of marketing grain from the conquered territories. The Moscow government rejects these accusations.
