The glacial fall in the Dolomites on Sunday is the result of climate change and global warming, said former extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner. After the accident on the Marmolada with at least six deaths, he spoke out and warned against trips on ice without a mountain guide.
According to Reinhold Messner, glaciers pose an increasing threat because of the unusually high temperatures during this time, making them increasingly unstable. At the edges of the cliff, so-called ice towers or seracs form, “which can be as tall as skyscrapers or rows of houses.” The South Tyrolean knows these ice towers, among other things, from the Himalayas. He himself has climbed all 14 eight-thousanders in the world and believes that there are many more rocks and ice falling today than in the past.
We would “see incidents like the Marmolada even more often.” Messner therefore warns that tours on ice should only be undertaken with a mountain guide. “Global warming is coming from the metropolitan areas and cities, from the highways and factories,” the 77-year-old said. In the mountains, on the other hand, you have seen with the naked eye how glaciers are melting for 30 years.
More victims feared
At least six people were killed on Sunday when an ice sheet broke on Mount Marmolada in Italy. Eight other people were injured and 15 are still missing. It is believed that there could be other casualties among the ice, snow and rock masses.
