Tens of thousands of flights – flooding around Sydney after persistent rain

Date:

After heavy rainfall, the east coast of Australia is again hit by massive flooding. The situation is particularly bad in the Sydney metropolitan area at the moment, where an evacuation order was even issued for 30,000 people on Monday morning (local time).

Hundreds of residents called for help overnight, local emergency services said. Citizens in many more areas have been urged to prepare to evacuate their homes, it said.

No weather improvement in sight for the time being
The heavy rain around Sydney has been going on for days. Australian media quoted the weather services as saying there had been four times the usual rainfall in the entire month of July. According to meteorologists, there was initially no improvement in visibility.

In March there was devastating flooding in Sydney and large parts of the states of New South Wales and Queensland. In just three months, the metropolis with the famous opera house, which is popular with tourists from all over the world, fell as much as usual in a whole year. Many regions are still suffering the devastation of the historic floods and are already being hit by floods again.

Cargo ship drifted without propulsion from Sydney
Meanwhile, a freighter runs aground in heavy seas off the south coast of Sydney. The Hong Kong-registered “Portland Bay” had left Wollongong in the morning, but suffered a complete power outage shortly after. A large-scale rescue operation was underway to prevent the ship from being pushed against the cliffs on the high seas.
