Illegal Import – Fire Bacterium threatens almond trees in South -Italy

Date:

After the olive trees, the alarm bells are now starkly by the Italian almond producers: a variant of the fire bacterium was found on almond trees in Apulia. It was only last year that the vermin destroyed entire areas.

At that time, many olive trees on their knees and enormous economic damage were forced. Now there is fear that the Xylella best can extend more and more to almond and fruit trees. Wine production is also in danger.

They suspect that the bacterium was caused by the illegal import of seedlings from the United States or the Central East. These must increase the competitiveness of agricultural products in Italy. The Science Research Institute CNR showed that the bacterium was introduced three to five years ago, possibly from California, where a program for genetic improvement of almonds is being carried out.

A contamination with Xylella Fastidiosa usually leads to the plant dying within a short period. Fighting is difficult, infected plants must be cleaned up and destroyed immediately. The fire bacterium is one of the most dangerous and strictest regulated shame organisms in Europe.

According to Sicily, Puglia is the second largest almond generator region in Italy. There were approximately 26,500 tons of almonds at about 19,400 hectares in the previous year – a third of the entire Italian almond production.
