A low human axis a few centimeters thick and bone remains on an area of ​​approximately 450 square meters and a new excavation in the former Nazi murder institution (Upper Austria) brought new knowledge into the atrocities of the Nazi regime in the former euthanasia institution.

The north side of the area that was previously untouched by excavations in the former Hartheim NS -killing facility in Upper Austria. Last week a large scale of ashes with burnt human remains and bone residues were found. The remains were found about a meter deep on a surface of approximately 450 square meters.

“The current results are of great importance for the memory of the murdered and research work in Hartheim. We will involve the newly discovered areas with the human remains in the worthy memory. Exactly 80 years later, the new findings also offer us important information about the perpetrators’s attempts to eliminate the traces of their crimes, ”says Florian Schwanninger, head of the Hartheim Learning and Memorial.

About 30,000 people killed
From May 1940 to November 1944, around 30,000 people were murdered in a gas chamber from May 1940 to November 1944. Above all, people with disabilities or mental disorders, as well as concentration camps and forced laborers among the victims, belonged.

“Crimes from the Nazi era should never be forgotten”
Statements of contemporary witnesses and aerial photos led to the new studies on the north side of the former murder institution. They were carried out by the Ministry of the Interior together with the state of Upper Austria. For the Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner, the finds show that “all tragic remains” of the Nazi regime are in no way known. “The crimes of the Nazi era should never be forgotten.”

For the Governor of Upper Austria, Thomas Stelzer, the atrocities of the Nazis are ‘fully processed’. This is not only our duty, but our effort.

Now the entire dimensions of the newly discovered grave are determined to make a worthy commemoration of the victims of national socialism possible.
