On the morning of October 7, 2023, visitors to the Supernova Festival in Israel saw terrible things that are difficult to end. Of all things, it is said that their drug use has given some party guests a certain psychological protection against trauma with a view to the atrocities, as a study reveals.
Many festival visitors had consumed drugs when the Hamas terrorists attacked the event and caused a massacre. Neuroscientists now discovered that intoxicating party guests can get along better with the traumatic consequences of this massacre than anyone that was sober during the raid.
The researchers discovered during the incident before that time. The study investigated more than 650 survivors – two of the three participants were under the influence of drugs such as MDMA, LSD, marijuana or psychoactive mushrooms during the slaughter.
“MDMA protected the best,” explains Professor Roy Salomon from the preliminary result of the study. Festival guests that every substance that also took place in ecstasy pills were mentally clear with what was experienced. “They slept better, had fewer psychological problems – they felt better than the people who hadn’t taken dust,” said the professor.
It is believed that the prosocial hormones, such as oxytocin, have led to this effect. These substances help to reduce the fears and to increase the feeling of connection between the victims. Survivors who were under the MDMA influence also managed to support families and friends better.
“Highly saved my life”
The study could not discover whether drug use had negatively influenced the escape opportunities of the festival visitors, because only surviving topics were of the study. A victim said she was convinced that drugs had a positive effect on her survival – she was not frozen nor collapsed when the terrorists came. “I feel that it saved my life that I was so high. It was as if I wasn’t in the real world, “explains Michal Ohana, who succeeded in escaping.
The study offers new knowledge that can be interesting for the use of MDMA in psychotherapy. There have been experiments in the past in which the material was used in the treatment of post -traumatic stress disorders. So far, however, the drug has only been approved for these purposes in Australia.
