Pope Francis has again condemned abortion after the US Supreme Court decision on abortion. “I ask: is it legitimate, is it right to take a human life to solve a problem,” the head of the Catholic Church said Monday. The 85-year-old Argentine compared abortion to “hiring a hitman”.
In an interview with Reuters news agency, he said he respected the US court’s decision, but was unable to speak about it from a legal point of view. Pope Francis has described abortion as “murder” in the past. “Everyone who aborts kills,” he said on the return flight from Slovakia in September 2021. Francis said at the time that a fetus a few weeks after conception should be considered and respected as human life.
Clear the way for stricter abortion laws
In late June, the mostly conservative U.S. court overturned a 1973 ruling known as Roe v. Wade, which previously guaranteed the right to abortion. It paved the way for stricter abortion laws. The decision sparked outrage.
US bishops welcome decision
From the Vatican, the Pontifical Academy for Life was the first to respond. “After 50 years, it’s important to start again an ideology-free debate about the importance of protecting life in civil society, to ask us what kind of society and society we want to build.” Catholic bishops in the US welcomed the court decision.
