Doctor warns: gap in the treatment of osteoporosis

Date:

Anyone who has the osteoporosis of bone disease and breaks the dijhalsbot dies about the same frequent as someone with malignant cancer. A doctor warns of a “treatment gap” in Austria, after all, more than half a million people are affected by osteoporosis.

Of these are four fifth women and a fifth men, internist Maya Thun emphasizes at the pharmacy conference in Schlading. Patients are increasingly struggling with fragility fractures – ie breaks that arise from only small stress.

Menuy in men higher than in women
It is crucial after a break to ‘treat very quickly’, the doctor emphasizes. The chance of a second fracture increases considerably. “We also know that about 25 percent of patients indirectly die from the consequences within a year after a thigh fracture,” Thun explains.

The mortality is very high, “to compare with a malignant cancer.” This is higher in men than in women. “Many are afraid of cardiovascular or cancer, but you can also be afraid of osteoporosis,” the doctor warns.

“One of the three women and every fifth man for more than 50 years worldwide will be statistically experiencing a vulnerability breach,” explains Thun. After such a break, only 20 percent of patients also receive therapy after staying in the hospital. Thun sees a “treatment gap” here.

Austria is located on the number of thigh fractures worldwide behind Denmark and Sweden. “We don’t know exactly why,” says Thun. But it is clear: “There is a need for action”. The broken bones cost the general public “a lot of money”.
