The report is available – “Mayday -Call”: wild scenes for emergency landing in Graz

Date:

Wild scenes took place at Graz Airport last December. Because a Swiss machine suddenly had to be noticed. A crew member even lost his life. A new report now shows that only 21 minutes had appeared between the first problems and the emergency landing that had led to the precarious situation.

During the flight on December 23 of the previous year, everything went on schedule until 4.30 pm. The machine, an Airbus A220, was only 40,000 feet from Bucharest to Zurich. At 4.32 pm there was suddenly a first error message in the cockpit of the two pilots.

Loud bang in the cockpit
About a minute and a half later, “Master Lution” was declared in the cockpit, which the crew members pointed to the strong motor vibrations. At the same time there was a loud bang that was also observed by passengers and stewardesses.

Less than 30 seconds after the last report later, the pilots also saw smoke in the cockpit and immediately explained their oxygen masks, explained “Austrian wings”.

Captain reported “Mayday”
At 4.34 pm the message “Master Warning” sounded, activated by a smoke detector on the toilet. A computer voice warned four times: “Smoke!” Shortly thereafter, “Masterwaarschuwing” followed again, this time due to low oil pressure in the left -hand motor. The captain explained an air case against “Mayday”, Rauch reported in the cockpit and started a descent.

At 4.35 pm the captain ordered the cabin crew to prepare for emergency landing. A minute later the pilots also asked for an immediate landing in Graz-Thalerhof. The passenger masks were not activated, instead the stewardesses gave up their soiled “smoke hoods”.

The plane only flew for a short time with a motorcycle
At 4.37 pm the left engine was switched off, the plane only flew with a motor. At 4.40 pm the captain informed the 70 passengers. At 4.53 pm the machine landed safely on slopes 34c.

4.55 pm: After the correct engine was switched off, the evacuation was initiated through emergency slips. Four of the six doors were used, two remained closed – why is still unclear.

Failure of the engine and the problem with the oil system
According to the report, there was a failure of the left engine and the problems with the oil system of this turbine riding for the first error message, the Austrian aviation magazine explained “Austrian wings”.

The “smokehoods” of the crew are also being investigated. It must be clarified whether a defect was available on one of the “escape hoods” or whether an operational error led to the death of the young stewardess. 17 people were injured by the overall incident.
