Seniors threatened – Number of fatal bicycle accidents fell enormously

Date:

The VCö reports that the number of fatal bicycle accidents in traffic in Austria fell by ten to 32 last year. More than half of the victims were seniors.

A detailed analysis of the VCö in the period 2021 to 2023 shows that only two of the 136 fatal bicycle accidents passed on on structurally individual cycle paths that were required an increased expansion of the cycle path.

In these three years, 110 people had an accident, 81 percent, not on a bicycle system, but in the general street. This share was particularly high outside the local area with 92 percent. From the fatal bicycle accidents outside the local area, two -thirds of the streets performed with a speed limit.

More attention for older road users required
Especially with the bicycle infrastructure, the catch -up requirement in Austria is very large. Too narrow cycle paths or completely miss cycle paths on streets, where you can drive faster than 30 kilometers per hour, the VCö wrote a major security risk. Again, it also shows that the transport system must take more account for the elderly. According to this, 17 of the 32 fatalities in the previous year were older than 65, ten dead older than 75 years.

Together with the population, the VCö now wants to show problem areas to cycle. Dangerous sections can be entered in an online map. The mobility organization collects the entries and forwards them to the responsible city or municipality or the responsible state.
