Since 2019, 17.1 % have grown the number of families that defend their economic situation as poorly to 26.6 % and a third of households (29.5 %) have suffered a kind of economic limitations, which means an increase of 1.6 %.
Four out of ten families believe that their economic situation has deteriorated in the last three years (41.2 % compared to 29.3 %) and three out of ten houses are seen with difficulties to reach the end of the month (a rate that is very similar to the previous one).
These are some of the conclusions of the survey of the living conditions that correspond to 2024 published on Thursday by the Basque Institute of Statistics, Eustat, that updates the latest edition of the study (2019).
During this time, the number of families who think that their economic situation has become worse, increased and they are already 41.2 %. There are also more families who now look better, a total of 16 % (that is 2.5 more percentage points). The remaining 42.9 % believes that the economic situation has remained stable (-14.2 %).
Households who feel that they are struggling to arrive at the end of the month are somewhat reduced (-1.2 %), but remain almost a third of the total, in particular 28.7 %.
Since 2019, 17.1 % have grown the number of families that defend their economic situation as poorly to 26.6 % and a third of households (29.5 %) have suffered a kind of economic limitations, which means an increase of 1.6 %.
These economic limitations are concentrated in free time (77.7 %of cases), in clothing and footwear (56.4 %) and in house equipment and food (both with 42 %). Limitations in medical care are the least common (16.2 %).
Almost all Euskadi houses have household appliances, mainly devices, but 39.8 % have little equipment. This percentage has grown by 22 % since 2019.
Although almost 100 % of the families have audiovisual equipment, 2.6 % of the houses, almost 25,000, have no heating (+1.2 %).
As far as the environment is concerned, the vast majority of families have less than 10 minutes walk from their home a bus stop (95.9 %), a bar (95.2 %), a cafeteria (92.8 %), a bakery (91.7 %), a pharmacy (91.5 %), a food store (91 %) and a supermarket (91 %).
Last year Seven out of ten Basques went on vacation (72.6 % compared to 64.8 % of 2019). The majority traveled to other autonomous communities (68.2 %), 13.9 % to a European country and 10.5 % remained in Euskadi. Family houses were the type of stay used during their vacations.
The research also shows that 37.2 % of the Basque population has 2 to 4 hours a day free time. The most popular activities to enjoy leisure time are navigating on the internet (69.4 %), listening to music (66.6 %), watching home cinema (59.2 %) and sports (49.6 %).
Sports clubs are precisely organizations with the highest number of affiliated companies (300,000 people in 2024) and there are more men than registered women (67.4 % and 32.6 %, in any case).
The vast majority of Basque (88.5 %) have family members (parents, children) who live outside their home and maintain “intense” relationships, that is, often weekly or daily. In the case of friends, these intense relationships are 78 %.
