Germany extended border controls in Bavaria until 15 September. There have always been illegal and rejected to Austria. As the current search statistics show, this happened almost 3000 times in 140 days.
An average of 20 illegally arriving in 140 days every day, were rejected by the federal police on Bavaria’s boundaries to Austria and the Czech Republic. This is demonstrated by the current search statistics for the period from 16 September of the previous year to 2 February 2025. In total there had been around 5,600 illegal access attempts to Germany in the section, nearly 3000 rejections or return to Austria.
Countless arrests
In addition, 256 smugglers were arrested on the borders of Bavaria and 95 extremists were arrested. Our neighboring country has already expanded its checks to Austria until 15 September, which has a great potential for the OUVP: “We do not want to become the collection of stranded illegal migrants with our border regions,” says ÖVP State Manager Florian Hiegelsberger.
Many questions open
A first step in the direction of border security must be included in the new government program with the inclusion of the OUVP claim after building a border protection unit. There is “further development of the foreign and border police on a flexibly usable border protection unit”. It is just as open as the exact possible use of the technical support services stated in the Schengen-Borders. There are drones, motion sensors or technologies to check traffic flows.
High acceptance of border controls
The fact is that according to an opinion survey of 2023, 64 percent of the Austrian population supports border controls. During an IMAS survey in January 2025, 74 percent of the Austrians said that refugee flows and immigration “very strong” or “rather strong” trigger problems.
