Roof already removed – old Biedermeier house: demolition in a conservation area

Date:

An old Biedermeier house in Vienna’s new building has now disappeared. The city blames the federal government.

It is one of the oldest building complexes in the 7th district and is about to be demolished – the Biedermeier house at Kaiserstraße 31. It was built in 1803/1804 and together with the adjacent buildings at Kaiserstraße 25-29 it forms a closed old city ensemble known as conservation area was inaugurated. As early as 1973, the Federal Monuments Service granted protection, at least for the “reliefs of the street facade”. So how can it be demolished now despite the conservation area and monument protection?

When asked by “Krone”, Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaál (SPÖ) said: “The penalties in the building code for violations have only recently been increased significantly, so we tightened them up. This case shows just how urgent a reform of the housing system is. tenancy law. A general tenancy law could fundamentally change this. The federal government is responsible.” The office of district leader Markus Reiter (Greens) reports that they were not involved in the demolition permit and do not endorse it.

MA 37: “Economic construction readiness is given here”
“Unfortunately, it is our fault that the district manager was not notified, there is nothing to cover up. However, the property is economically ready for demolition,” said the Construction Police (MA 37). A petition has now been launched by the “Initiative Worthy of Living New Construction Reform Vienna Building Regulations”.
