Not mandatory – Driving license: no health tests for the elderly

In the debate about a reform of the EU driving license rules, mandatory health tests for older drivers are finally off the table.

In contrast to the proposed EU committee, an agreement between the European Parliament and the Member States does not provide for such regulations from night to Tuesday.

In the case of an extension, countries may require a medical examination, but can also decide against it.

  • Anyone who runs a driving license test must show a medical examination or a self-disclosure of health in all EU countries.
  • The reform is intended to become a digital driver’s license throughout the EU by 2030. Holders of driving license can also request a physical ID.
  • With the reform, the EU also determines a two -year trial period in all Member States.
  • More than a year ago, the 27 Member States had pronounced compulsory health tests for the elderly of older driving license.
