Less financial help – 14 million children worldwide will soon be hungry

Date:

At least 14 million children worldwide are in danger of interrupting food or supporting food. This increases their risk of serious malnutrition and death, Unicef warns. The reason: cutbacks of funds.

The financing crisis comes at a time when the need for support for children is more high than ever: millions of children have difficult access to food. This is, for example, due to journeys, conflicts or the consequences of climate change, such as the UN children’s help.

Financial cuts “Life Life”
“Since 2000, the number of malnourished children under the age of five has decreased by 55 million, and the lives of millions of bad ordinary children has been saved,” says Unicef executive director Catherine Russell. But the positive development could soon be history again. “Drastic cuts in the funds are in danger of destroying these performance – and to jeopardize the lives of millions of other children,” warns Russell.

28,000 therapy centers in danger
The reductions of auxiliary funds in 17 countries, which are seriously influenced by malnutrition, would have a major impact. Almost 28,000 therapy centers supported by UNICEF run the risk of treatment of malnutrition – some have even hired the company. Also, 2.4 million children with Malnattice could no longer receive special food, Unicef illustrates the consequences of the financing crisis.

Girls and women are mainly affected
Young girls and women mainly run the risk of being malnourished. Even before the cuts, the number of pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as the young girls who suffer from acute malnutrition, rose 25 percent since 2020 – to 6.9 million. For this reason, UNICEF asks “Governments and donors to prioritize investments in health and nutrition programs for children.”
