The Innsbruck prosecutor’s office is investigating whether there is a criminal offense in the case of the two mixed bodies in the Stubai Valley. The guild master of the Tyrolean undertakers, Markus Floßmann, can imagine additional measures to prevent such mix-ups in the future.
“I know no more than the Tyrolean crown is.” Markus Floßmann, head of the Tyrolean undertakers’ guild, was surprised by the sensational mix-up of the two bodies in the Stubai Valley. As reported, a undertaker buried an 85-year-old in the grave of a 100-year-old last week. Police have halted the false cremation of the woman at the last minute after a complaint from funeral directors.
Mayor removed from board meeting
In Fulpmes, where the 100-year-old has actually been in her grave since Friday, the extremely dramatic confusion for the relatives is viewed with a wink. “People tend to see things with humor,” says Fulpme Mayor Johann Deutschmann. He was in no mood to laugh himself, however, when a “very urgent” call from the undertaker pulled him out of a community board meeting at 10 a.m. on July 1. “He asked me for official permission to open the grave,” Deutschmann recalls. The village chief then granted this so that the 85-year-old could be exhumed. According to the undertaker, this body, which was intended for cremation, was then taken to the crematorium.
The spokesman of the Innsbruck prosecutor’s office, Hansjörg Mayr, meanwhile confirmed a report about the spectacular incident of the police to the “Krone”. “We are therefore checking whether there is a criminally relevant fact,” says Mayr. In this regard, it is about disturbing the peace of the dead.
Similar cases in Carinthia and Styria
According to guild master Markus Floßmann, there are no more bizarre mix-ups in Tyrol than in the Stubaital. However, such incidents have been documented in Carinthia and Styria. That is why additional security measures have been introduced in Styria after a similar mix-up in 2017. “We will also talk about that as soon as possible”, announces the guild master.
Currently, security measures in Tyrol consist of the constant checking of the name tag attached to a corpse and the coffin.
Discussion of a second study
Because the cremation of a corpse is no longer reversible, in some German states, for example, a second autopsy in the crematorium is mandatory. “We don’t have that,” says Floßmann. Should one be introduced in Tyrol for security reasons? “The state or the district administration should decide on this,” says the Tyrolean guild master.
We also do not have a four-eyes principle, whereby the relatives look at the corpse one last time.
