The prisoner mayor of Istanbul called on his supporters for resistance – and they go on the street on hundreds of thousands. On Saturday there will be the next major meeting against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
People came together on the Asian side of the Bosphorus -Metropool to demonstrate after the detention of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu for the preservation of democracy in Turkey. The head of the largest CHP of the opposition party, Özgur Özel, spoke about more than two million participants.

The management of the CHP wants to continue the protests until an early presidential election is planned or imamoglu is released. On Friday there were demonstrations in different cities on Friday. Imamoglu itself wrote in a guest post for the “New York Times” that Turkey had transformed into a “Republic of fear” under Erdogan.
But despite – or precisely – because of – repression to government critics, people constantly resist the street. “I am on the side of our young people and admire their courage. They are about to write history,” Imamoglu wrote.

The 53-year-old is currently being held in the well-known Marmara prison in Silivri near Istanbul. The popular opposition politician was imprisoned on March 19, referring to accusations of corruption and later deducted as mayor.
