Up to 300 prisoners managed to escape, 64 of whom belong to the terrorist group
Up to 600 inmates managed to escape from a prison in the Nigerian capital Abuja on Tuesday evening after the terrorist group Boko Haram attacked the facility. However, after the escape, security forces have captured half of them, Nigerian Defense Minister Bashir Magashi said.
Magashi specified that of the 300 inmates who eventually managed to escape from the prison, 64 belong to the fundamentalist group. At the moment, Boko Haram has not claimed responsibility for the facts, but according to the minister is responsible for the attack “according to all indicators”.
In regards to the attack, security sources have revealed that the guards responsible for securing both the facilities and their surroundings were removed from their posts 24 hours before it took place, local newspapers say.
According to the same version, the troops and security guards at other posts were withdrawn and their replacements did not arrive until after the attack had already taken place.
Insecurity in Nigeria, previously concentrated in the northeast of the country, has spread to other areas in the north and northwest in recent months, raising alarm bells about the potential expansion of terrorist and criminal networks.
The situation has reached such a point that some local authorities, such as that of Zamfara (northeast), have asked the civilian population to take up arms to defend themselves against all these groups, a measure criticized by the central government, which describes it as “a recipe for anarchy”.
At least two people have also been injured in recent hours in an attack by unknown gunmen on a convoy belonging to the president’s team, Muhammadu Buhari, in Katsina state, northern Nigeria.
Boko Haram is an Islamic terrorist group, a follower of the Islamic State. It is active in certain areas of West Africa, notably Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Northern Cameroon. He became world famous in 2014 when he kidnapped the so-called Chibok girls. Terrorists have kidnapped nearly 300 minors from a school in Northern Nigeria and many of them have not yet been found.
