With bait offers – Russian NGO: ‘Putin sends prisoners to front’

Date:

In the war of aggression in Ukraine, Putin’s army is supported not only by the mercenary group “Wagner”, but soon also by Russian prisoners, according to a Russian human rights activist. In an interview with Bild, the activist explained: “We received information from three Russian prisons near St. Petersburg that uniformed “Wagner” mercenaries showed up and offered the prisoners to go to the front to to fight against the Nazis.”

Residents should be offered several “benefits” at the same time:

  • Cancellation of the rest of the sentence
  • a payment of 200,000 rubles (about 3026 euros)
  • Their criminal records should be erased from their files
  • In the event of death, the next of kin will receive five million rubles (about 78,640 euros)

“Russia behind bars”
Romanov is the director of Russia Behind Bars. She has been taking care of the prisoners in Russian prisons for years. A partner of a prisoner told Romanov that her husband had signed up for the troops and would soon be going to Ukraine. According to the partner, 40 men from the prison in question would soon be fighting in Ukraine.

First, the mercenary group “Wagner” tried to recruit prisoners who already had military experience. In the meantime, however, they also have to target prisoners who do not have them. So far, inmates convicted of bodily harm, theft or greed have been dealt with, Romanow told the “Bild.”

So far, she has no knowledge of convicted murderers being sent to Ukraine.
