It is shortly before Easter and now eggs are scarce. In some supermarkets you can no longer find organic eggs in the late afternoon. In addition to the approaching Easter, the reason for this is also the aftermath of bird flu. Moreover, the Austrians are eating more and more eggs.
Due to the poultry test, many millions of laying hens had to be killed in recent months. The “big losses” in other countries would indirectly affect the Austrian market and the situation of the egg supply, said it from the poultry industry. In the autumn 2024, approximately 200,000 of the 7.3 million laying chickens in Austria were cried because of the bird flu.
“Although we are back in the entire production in Austria, individual eggs are partly in stock on the market,” said the chairman of the Ölügelwirtschaft Österreich, Heinz Schlögl.
No or very expensive strange eggs
Wholesalers who had previously provided domestic gastronomy with “cheaper strange eggs” would currently receive “no or only very expensive eggs” abroad. “As a result, hosters switch to the food trade when buying,” said Schlögl.
Austrians eat more eggs
Moreover, the Austrians are eating more and more eggs. Last year 7.4 percent more eggs were sold in the trade in food stores, as the Rollama market analysis demonstrates. About half of the eggs sold came from the ground position.
60 million eggs in Easter
On average, each household bought 230 eggs per year for consumption at home in 2024. Including eggs incorporated in pasta, cakes and pastries, according to the poultry senior it is approximately 248 eggs. About 60 million eggs are sold and consumed during Easter.
The domestic poultry industry asks consumers when buying colored Easter eggs to pay attention to the red and white-red ama seal of approval.
