The pressure was too great – British Prime Minister Johnson wants to throw in the towel

Date:

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is about to resign, British media report. Dozens of MPs and ministers had previously run away from him. Johnson, who had fallen out of favor due to a number of scandals, had to accept a total of 53 resignations from the ranks of the Tories. By Wednesday, he had still seen no reason to resign. Potential successors, however, had already positioned themselves.

Johnson had to resign in one day more than any British Prime Minister in history. On Thursday, Brandon Lewis resigned from the Northern Ireland secretary, saying he “couldn’t sacrifice his personal integrity to defend things as they are.” Shortly thereafter, he was followed by Treasury Secretary Helen Whately and Security Secretary Damian Hinds. The latter stressed the need for a change in leadership. Science and Innovation Secretary George Freeman stated that “enough is enough” and that it cannot go on like this.

Johnson declared Wednesday: ‘I’m not going’
Finally, Health Minister Ed Argar, Digital Affairs Minister Chris Philp and Pensions Minister Guy Opperman threw in the towel before 8 a.m. Secretary of State Michael Gove was removed from office on Wednesday for infidelity. The ailing prime minister rejected all demands from his own ranks that he resign on behalf of his party. “I’m not going,” Johnson declared defiantly. He wants to fight to the bitter end for the 14 million voters who gave him his overwhelming majority in 2019.

In all, more than 50 MPs had quit their jobs before Johnson apparently changed his mind. As the British newspaper “The Guardian” reported, Downing Street said: “The Prime Minister will make a statement to the country today.” This is expected tomorrow morning.
