After Boris Johnson resigns as ‘Tory’ leader, the Conservative Party starts the internal process to find a new leader.
In the first place, a period is opened for the nominationswhich must have the approval of two other conservative lawmakers.
Then it starts a voting round, in which the delegates must choose their favorite candidate by secret ballot. The person who gets the fewest votes on each vote is eliminated and the process is repeated as many times as necessary. until there are two final candidates left
These two final candidates undergo a vote by email of the wider Conservative Party membership, and the winner is named leader, de facto assuming the functions of Prime Minister It will have the power, but not the obligation, to call early elections.
The duration of this process depends on the number of candidates that apply. Theresa May became leader less than three weeks after David Cameron retired in 2016 and all other contenders dropped out mid-race.
Boris Johnson faced former health minister Jeremy Hunt in Conservative members’ round to replace May in 2019 and took office two months after May announced her intention to resign.
