A new danger spreads in the stables of Austria and presents farmers with existential challenges. While the mouth and claw disease lurks on the eastern borders, the dreaded Bluetry disease has already reached the first companies in the west of the country.
From the rain to the roof edge, it is currently being said for local farmers. In addition to the approaching Mond and Mallow Disease in Hungary and Slovakia, the disease with blue tongue also rolls to home.
Unobtrusive insect like a disaster
The So -Called Gnitze – an inconspicuous insect – brings the virus to the country. What had already affected thousands of companies in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands in the previous year is now overwhelming: the first cases have been confirmed, especially in the west of Austria, and a total of 244 red and white rods were hit.
Every fourth infection fatal
Sheep in particular gets hard: the disease ends fatally with every fourth infection. Livestock suffers from severe pain and provides less milk – the market also feels that. Milk prices are already rising in Europe. Farmers are confronted with a double burden: animals suffer and enormous care for infected animals.
“Anyone who acts now can prevent major damage”
The only effective weapon: a vaccination. Three vaccines have already been approved, they make the course of the disease much milder. The question will explode throughout Europe this year – and the vaccine needs months lead time.
“If you are still acting today, you can protect your animals and prevent greater damage. The goal is a vaccination percentage of 80 percent, but we are still far from that,” warns Christian Zainzinger, expert in the field of animal welfare at Boehringer Ingelheim.
