Opinions split – huge naked steel woman causes excitement

Date:

An almost 15 -meter -high statue of a naked woman is the new, much visible artwork in the Embarcadero Plaza of the California Metropolis of San Francisco. The image called “R-evolution” causes a lot of discussion.

The installation is intended to set a sign of female power and visibility in public space. The artist Marco Cochrane originally created the sculpture for the Burning Man Festival in 2015. Since then she has since seen in Las Vegas and Petaluma. Now she is at least six months – possibly also a whole year – for the well -known ferry building on the water.

Sculpture “breathes” once a day
The statue brings a weight of approximately 14,500 kilograms to wages and consists entirely of steel. At night, she shines through built -in engines must look like they are breathing. Cochrane emphasizes that “R evolution” should not only embody an artistic, but also a social explanation: “This image is a call to a world in which all people can move freely and without fear.”

Criticism of the location and time
Despite her artistic message, the installation received serious criticism. On social media, ironic comments spread rapidly, mainly because of a viral video that shows a pallet truck that is maneuvered during the assembly between the legs of the statue.

For many commentators a symbol for what they feel like the miserable symbol policy of the city.

Homelessness in addition to XXL sculpture
Moreover, the statue raises new questions about the priority setting of the metropolis. In the immediate vicinity of the statue, districts such as tenderloin or Soma continue to fight with visible homelessness, open drug scene and empty stores. Although the city wants to offer almost $ 690 million for programs against homelessness in the coming financial year, according to a current count, more than 8,300 people in San Francisco are without a permanent place of residence.

Criticism of “Anti -Men’s Program”
Conservative voices criticize the action sharply. Bruce Lou, Republican challenger of Nancy Pelosi in the final choice of the congress, said: “San Francisco seems to care for everything – except what really matters.” John Dennis, former chairman of the Republican Party of the City, even spoke about a “feminist, anti -moon program” that manifests itself in the image.

But there is also criticism from the progressive spectrum: Sarah Hotchkiss, art editor of the public broadcaster Kqed, wrote in a comment: “Nobody asked about this image. And yet we have to look at them all.” The decision to prepare the artwork without public participation is seen as inappropriate by many.

Project failed several times
The path from the statue to San Francisco was not easy. A planned line -up at the National Mall in Washington, DC failed due to possible damage to the underground. An earlier attempt to install “R-evolution” on the Union Square in San Francisco was also rejected for similar reasons.
