Special campaign of the city of Vienna: from 1 May 2025, young academics are now easier to get to their own home. Because cheap apartments are made available in the municipal building.
In Vienna alone, there are more than 193,000 students. These are particularly influenced by the rapidly rising costs during life. According to the Chamber of Labor, young academics have to spend 43 percent of income for their housing costs. In private rent – the most common form of life – the load is even 49 percent. So the demand for affordable living space is great.
The city now responds with a temporary special campaign and from 1 May releases 1,000 community apartments – without the necessary “urgent living needs”. Apartments with one or two rooms and a size of approximately 35 to 45 square meters are made available. These should cost between 230 and 300 euros per month. The search for an apartment takes place online via the Wohnberatung Vienna website and is limited to three months – to 30 September 2025. The conditions for this?
Austrian citizenship or EU citizenship, an income below the upper limit, completed 18 years of life and a main residence in Vienna for at least two years, at the specific address. And: you have to study at Vienna University of Vienna University of Applied Sciences. It is easier to make “affordable and safe living space in the community building for students,” said Residential Building Councilor Kathrin Gaál (Spö). But that is not the only innovation.
To access a municipal apartment or a funded apartment, you had to be registered at one Viennese address for two years. This award criterion falls on May 1. In the future a continuous main residence of two years in Vienna, regardless of the number of addresses.
