It sounds like an Easter wonder that corresponds to the festival of the resurrection. A young man is completely unable to move because of brain inflammation. Spirit full, but trapped in the immobile body. After four years, Richi Koung can eat independently and go around with a wheelchair.
In 2021 the case went through the media. The actor and moderator Richi Kuong – then 26 years old – fell ill with severe brain inflammation. He fell into a coma. For the doctors in the Vienna Akh, it was initially unclear whether the young man would ever wake up again. Kuong floated in mortal danger.
But the professional AKH team was able to stabilize and remove it from a coma. However, the inflammation of the brain caused a complete paralysis of the body. This very rare disease has a name: locked syndrome. Kuong was mentally full, but trapped in an immobile body. A nightmare.
Initially only eye movements
After a few weeks of intensive treatment, the patient was able to at least make himself understandable with eye movements. He was transferred to the Donaustadt nursing home and received extensive care there.
Nowadays, after four years of massive nursing care, medical and therapeutic care, Kuong can now eat and speak independently, albeit very slowly and not flexible. Moreover, the 30-year-old continues to be independent with the help of a special electric wheelchair.
For him this is a huge increase in quality of life. “I miss the most to be able to talk and go. Fortunately I dream of it,” says the patient. Now Kuong wants to move from the nursing home to an apartment shared under supervision.
His recovery process can be described as a small medical miracle. And it shows the top performance that Viennese doctors, therapists and nurses can do. “Further important factors for his successes are certainly the high motivation of Richi Kuong and his strong willpower,” emphasize his supervisors in the nurse Donaustadt and in the AKH Vienna.
We wish Richi Kuong the best and great progress!
