Not only in the Catholic Church are the funeral service and the funeral of a high dignitaries often extremely beautiful. The now deceased Pope Franciscus had already forced some changes during his life.
When a pope dies, beautiful funerals in Rome have a tradition. So far they have followed unique and precise rituals. Before his death, however, Francis launched new rules for more modest mourning ceremonies for popes. That means: less splendor and simplified rites. And now for him now also a funeral outside the walls of the Vatican. Nevertheless, it will be a world event.
In April 2024, Francis approved a new funeral regulations for Puusen with the Latin title “Ordo ex -following Romani Pontificis”, she was published in November. As Francis emphasized, the renewed rite must underline that the funeral of a pope is of a “shepherd and disciple of Christ and not that of a powerful man in the world”.
Pope Leichnam is no longer openly opened
The changes ensure a tightening of the protocol. This eliminates the transfer of the body to the apostolic palace before it is recorded in St. Pietersbasilica. In the basilica of St. Peter, the dead pope is no longer openly exhibited on a catafalc, a high bahre, but in a simple wooden box. Another innovation is that the personnel of the papal bishop is no longer next to the coffin as a symbol of rule.
Rite for coffin on Monday evening
As before, the body is placed in a wooden box after the death of death, which also has a zinc box. However, no extra coffins were made of lead and oak wood as at the funeral service for the German Pope Benedict XVI, who died at the age of 95 on New Year’s Eve. This means that only two instead of four coffins are used.
The papal ceremonial master Diego Ravelli has already announced that the rite for coffin, in which the death of the Pope is officially found again, will take place on Monday evening. The ceremony is led by the Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell. In addition to him, Cardinal Dean Giovanni Battista takes part in the ceremony. In the meantime, there was also a first speculation of the cause of death: Francis could have succumbed to bleeding.
Last rest outside the Vatican walls
Even during his life, Francis spoke several times that he did not want to be buried in the Vatican caves under St. Peter’s Basilica. At his own request, he will now find his last peace in the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, one of his favorite places in Rome, not far from the main station. State guests, pilgrims and spectators from all over the world are also expected at this location.
