After the death of Pope Francis, some cardinals meet on Tuesday to make decisions about the upcoming funeral service. In particular, the exact time of the funeral of the late head of the Roman Catholic Church must be determined. The Vatican also published photos of the coffin ceremony on Monday evening.
As a rule, a pope is buried relatively quickly, usually four to six days after death. Francis’s body is currently still in his home in the Vatican, the Casa Santa Marta, where the Kistceremony took place on Monday evening. The death of the pope is re -confirmed in the presence of a doctor, in particular at the head of the Vatican Medical Service.
The coffin is expected to be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, so that believers can say goodbye to Francis. He is buried in the following days. Pope Franciscus is expected to find his last peace in the Roman basilica Santa Maria Maggiore. State guests from all over the world are expected at the funeral.
First cancellation for conclave
In the meantime, the former Archbishop of Vrhbosna (Sarajevo), Cardinal Vinko Puljic (79), has canceled his participation in the upcoming conclave for the election of a new Pope. For health reasons he could not come to Rome for health reasons, said Puljic of the Croatian newspaper “Vecernji List” (online Monday evening) according to Kathpress. “The doctors advise me against it and I do not intend to travel to Rome, unless the Vatican explicitly asks me,” said the cardinal.
Pope Francis was “the most strongest authority in the nightmare of the war, in which hope is actually killed”, Puljic was also cited by the Croatian broadcaster for the death of the Pope. “He spoke tirelessly against armor against war, so he had a special message to humanity.”
“Also many disappointments”
At the same time, Puljic caused a sensation with a comment that Francis left “countless memories, but also many disappointments” after his death. He did not say what these disappointments are. From 1990 to 2022, Puljic led the Catholic Archdiocese of Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Cardinal College, which is the top body of the Catholic World Church after the death of the Pope and to the choice of a successor, currently includes 252 men. However, they are only 135 younger than 80 and therefore have the right to vote. Puljic will be 80 on 8 September.
