Date:

While a large part of the Viennese spent the night in their bed on Thursday, Extreme athlete Josef Köberl, Kookstraat, defied. He is the first Austrian to control the dangerous ocean.

The Kookstraat in Nieuw -Zeeland is not friendly water. While waves run on the surface, sharks lurk and many jellyfish lurking. Especially with second, Josef Köberl has planned more contact than on Thursday evening. But even of that, the voters roads was not deterred about his 31-kilometer journey between the North and South Island.

Almost nine hours in the water
Köberl does not swam eight hours and 43 minutes, but an entry into the history books. To report? “That is driven around in the head. But it was not an option,” Köberl said on the beach after the Odyssey via WhatsApp to the “Kroon”. Because Köberl would not be Köberl if he could be stopped by nausea or burning jellyfish.

And the water temperature was also no problem for the experienced ice swimmer. “In the beginning the water still had 13 degrees Celsius. In the end it was already 16 degrees,” Köberl proudly reports.

Ab ins pub
But if you believed that his first way to the doctor took him, you are huge. “Now it is going into the pub. I can register on the wall of the successful canal swimmers.” Hopefully there was also time for a winning beer.
