May 1 is a holiday and the day of work for Austrians. This stems from a current IMAS survey. Only every tenth naming has something to do with customs such as “Mayypole”.
The participants were asked about their spontaneous associations on 1 May, allowed with several Nions. Almost every second term has something to do with a holiday, 45 percent with employees, every tenth mention of customs aspects. The respondents thought of social democracy (nine percent), the May March (nine percent) and parties with music, food and kirtag (six percent).
Twelve percent had no association on 1 May. The majority (62 percent) mentioned only one term. The IMAS Institute interviewed 1022 people aged 16 and older.
Where May 1 is a vacation
May 1 is a holiday in many European countries such as Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. In Austria there have been meetings on the working day since 1890. On May 1, 1890, the Wiener employees organized the largest political event with more than 10,000 participants. In national socialism, May 1 was the “national holiday of the German people”.
