After Strom -Blackout – When the lights returned, the jubilation broke out

Date:

Millions of Spaniards and Portuguese are allowed to breathe slowly: after the massive power outages, the location on the Iberian peninsula is slowly normalized again. When the lights arrived again, spontaneous cheers broke out on the street.

The Spanish network operator Red Eléctrica announced around 4 o’clock in the morning that about 87 percent of the food was restored. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had promised a return to the normal state a few hours earlier in a television address.

The power supply for 95 percent of the 6.5 million customers of the E-Reses network operator was also restored to the neighboring country Portugal, as the Omroep RTP reported. The Spanish government called no cause of the blackout.

There is no possibility, Sánchez said. Although the causes of the cause are active, according to Red Eléctrica, there was at least in the capital in the capital in the capital – which was already without electricity for nine hours – as well as in regions such as Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia, Asturias, Navarra and Valencia in general.

During the day, countless people were stuck on trains, metro and lifts in Portugal and Spain; Holidaymakers stranded at airports, and internet and telephone networks had also fallen. Traffic lights were out, hospitals had to switch to emergency operation with electricity generators, many Spaniards and Portuguese on the mainland could not work. In Madrid, the International Masters 1000 tennis tournament had to be interrupted with top players.

Cheers from Windows
According to the Spanish newspaper “El País”, the massive black -out only struck the mainland, but not the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. The capital Madrid was almost completely cut off from the outside world for hours. When the lights suddenly returned long after the dark, residents cheered on the street, the windows and the balconies. Shout like “Siii” (Jaaa) and “Vivaaa!” (Hurrayaa) could be heard from moving cars, other people enthusiastically sang the famous song “Y Viva España” (see tweet above).

The problems in Portugal were caused by a disruption in the Spanish power schedule because of a “rare atmospheric phenomenon”, RTP and the British broadcaster Sky News, referring to the Portuguese network operator. The company is gradually being restored, but the full standardization of the network can last a week “due to the complexity of the phenomenon”. The Portuguese Ministry of Defense called on the population to rest.

According to the newspaper “El País”, the National Institute for Cyber Security of Spain had announced that it is investigating whether a hacker attack could be behind the power failure. According to the Portuguese EU president -President António Costa there is currently no indication of such a cyber attack.
