Thousands of accidents with e-scooters are registered every year. The number of falls increases dramatically – most injuries influence the head! The Arbö Burgenland is now insisting on increased security and a helmet obligation for all E-scoot drivers.
Dangerous accidents with the e-scooter pass more often than before. On April 24, two young people traveled together in Hornstein and fell. Nobody was wearing a helmet. One of the two had to be flown to Akh Vienna with serious head injury in the helicopter of the emergency doctor.
Unauthorized tours with bad consequences
Four days earlier, a 30-year-old and his friend (17) -Heavily tangled alcoholized-also through the night in Knittelfeld in Styria and his friend (17)-Heavily alcoholic: falling with injuries on the arms and face.
On 27 February a lower Austrian scooter driver (19) rolled by St. Pölten at 50 km/h. “At the escape of the police, he ran over sidewalks and endangered passers -by -” said witnesses. The steering wheel was under the influence of drugs.
Minister after fallen in the hospital
For a scooter accident, the former finance minister Magnus Brunner was not immune. In the case of a fall in January 2023 in Vienna, he had suffered serious injuries on his face and head: “I can only advise everyone to wear a helmet.”
7500 injuries per year
E-scooters are becoming increasingly popular. Due to the dramatically increased number of accidents, the Arbö Burgenland demands a helmet obligation for all E-scoot controllers. Last year alone, 7,500 patients had to be treated in the hospital after waterfalls. This is an increase of 25 percent compared to 2023. Half of all injuries concerned the head.
“All this data prove that a general helmet obligation is absolutely necessary,” says the state director Martin Heissenberger of Arbö. The clear goal must be to increase the protection of the small, electric scooters drivers.
For rapid regulations
Children up to the age of 12 are already obliged to wear a helmet. “The same must be prescribed for young people and adults,” explains Heissenberger. From a legal point of view, the same rules apply to e-scooters, which can be a maximum of 25 km/h as for bicycles. Pedestrian paths are prohibition zones. A trip to two is also not allowed.
Another tip from the Arbö: “Note the quality of the e-scooter when buying! Cheap goods often have inferior components and therefore have rough defects.”
